Okay, we all know our favourite toys from our childhood can raise a fair bit of cash these days. We all heard about the trend with Pokemon cards a few years back, but they aren't the only ones.
LEGO® sets can also fetch a lot, with some modern sets, like the Star Wars Millennium Falcon, clocking in at over £3,700 for the 5,100-piece set. However, we're fans of the more traditional sets, which is why today, we're going to countdown the most valuable and expensive LEGO® sets ever.
These sets will surely make any LEGO® collector drool with envy, so let's get into it!
#5 - Set 6399 - Airport Shuttle - £2,157
Released in 1990, the Airport Shuttle may not look very impressive at first glance, but it's undoubtedly one of the rarer LEGO® sets out there.
Featuring nine mini-figures, six of which are unique to this set alone, the Airport Shuttle was only available for a short time, which is likely what has made it so valuable to collectors. Nowadays, you can buy a used set for around £700, but new sets, depending on their condition, can sell for a thousand or two easily!
#4 - Set 10143 - Star Wars Death Star - £2,240
Yes, we're not going not to mention the Star Wars, but while most eyes are on the big contenders, like the Falcon and impressive Darth Maul head (which can go for between £2,000 and £4,000), the Death Star is another high-value favourite.
With an RRP of £250, this 3,441-piece set can now be flogged for over £2,000, making it one of the most expensive sets on the market.
While perhaps not as sought-after as some of the other sets on this list, the Death Star is still a fan favourite, whether you're into Star Wars, LEGO®, or both, and is sure to continue to rise in value!
It even has planet-destroying lasers on show... What's not to love?!
#3 - Set 4000034 - LEGO® System House - £2,332
Another set doesn't look impressive at first, and you may be wondering how this simple-looking set could be worth nearly two and a half thousand pounds, but the answer is simple.
It's incredibly rare.
In fact, it was only made available to people who participated in the 2019 LEGO Inside Tour and is a replica of the Systems House offices that LEGO® actually uses to run their operations.
It even comes with ten unique mini-figures designed to look like the European sales directors that worked in the offices!
#2 - Set 1651-2 - Maersk Truck - £2,489
Coming in at number two, we have another unique promo release set, this time representing the Maersk transport lorries that are still popular to this day. This set was released back in 1980, only in Denmark, and clock in with their own mini-figure and 30 pieces to build.
Rarely seen through online sales, this is one rare set that will make anyone's heart race, especially at the price it goes for!
And that brings us to our final entry...
What could possibly be more valuable than a simple transport truck?
#1 - Set 4000012 - Piper Airplane - £4,201
At the prestigious number one, we have the Piper Airplane.
Another LEGO®-exclusive set, there were only 53 sets of the Piper Plane ever produced which were given only to those who attended the 2012 LEGO® Inside Tour. The set itself is based on an actual Piper Airplane, which is a model of an aeroplane that LEGO® acquired back in 1962, therefore paying homage to their past, and is no doubt one of the rarest sets around!
As you can see, LEGO® sets can be worth a lot more than you might think, especially if they're rare or exclusive sets! What's your favourite set on this list? Let us know in the comments below!
